Police Dogs before the Islamic Revolution:

In August 1965 The Imperial Iranian Police decided for the first time to employ dogs for difference duties. In policing duties, dogs helped for disclose the crimes and capture of the thieves. The police dogs performed successful jobs during these years but news about these dogs disappeared during the years and by the 1979 (the islamic revolution) we could not find any news about these dogs in the newspapers.

Dogs in Iranian Police after the Islamic revolution:

The first evidence for using dogs by Iranian Islamic police we fond in one film from the 1990s (The photo attached here >>) when Police men of Islamic regime used a hound for search a lost child.

On December 8, 1999 after Khatami the president of Iran came back from a visit in France it was reported that Iranian police force bought sniffer dogs from France to help in its desperate battle against drug trafficking. According to Colonel Yahya Azimi from Iran's anti drug campaign organization, French authorities provided the security forces with 10 sniffer dogs. France also sent a special trainer to provide a four month training period for the police, familiarizing them with the animals working procedures and how to handle the dogs.

All of these first 10 dogs were "Belgian Malinois shepherd" dogs and some German Shepherds joined the police force later.

Security forces equipped with these dogs are stationed along the eastern and western border of the country, as well as airports, city parks and cargo and passenger terminals. The decision to use sniffer dogs is the latest move in Iran's struggle against drug trafficking. It breaks with Islam's traditional negative attitude towards the animals which are considered to be "impure" in Iran and other Islamic countries. According to some reports, because of the same opinion these dogs were not so successful in their first days of service.

By 12/4/2001 Iran had 60 sniffer dogs in total and there was a training base in KamalShahr of Karaj (west of Tehran), where 25 of them were kept. 15 more dogs were added to this number in 2002.

Iran established its first sniffer dogs training and protection center in Karaj in 2000 with the cooperation of the United Nations and France. It is regarded among the best such centers in the world.
"Given the discovery of some 90 percent of the drug discoveries by sniffer dogs, they will be used in the exploration of other hidden hauls such as inflammable and explosive substances," The Police commander of anti-drug headquarters said. Similar bases will be established in Kerman, Isfahan and Khorasan provinces in the near future.

for example, people in airports were not ready that police forces check them or their bags with the nose of the dog!!!. but right now a "fatwa" (religion order) from the Islamic leader, finished this problem.

July 19, 2000 - Drug-sniffing dogs helped police discover 1,500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of morphine in Tehran and the notheastern Iranian city of Mianeh over the past several days.

Feb. 13, 2001 - Khorasan Province Law Enforcement Forces reported that the capital city Mashhad's airport now uses trained dogs to identify passengers who intend to smuggle narcotics out of the country.

April 12, 2001 - The commander of the Police's anti-drug headquarters said: Sniffer dogs used by Iranian police discovered some 2.5 tons of narcotics in six months during the last Iranian calender year (ended March 21, 2001). The seized haul mainly consisted of opium, hashish, morphine and heroin found by sniffer dogs in parks, passes and cars. The discoveries were made through the use of 15 sniffer dogs and the training of 15 police forces.
